Competition closed
Thank you to all that entered the Gleneagles Spa Weekend Competition. The luxury weekend for 4 was open to all those submitting a spreadsheet to convert Oracle hours into working days, hours and minutes.
We are delighted to announce S Caroline as the winner. Congratulations and we hope you enjoy your prize.
Winning entry
S Caroline used the TRUNC function for the conversion. This truncates a number to an optional number of decimals without rounding.
Notice that formula and inputs are separate with the hours per day included as a separate cell.
Is this magic?
But this formula looks like it has a hard coded magic number to calculate the minutes:
The 60 represents 60 minutes in an hour. But should this be in a separate cell? No. It is not a magic number. The number of minutes in an hour is God given and can never change. Separating it to a separate cell is not necessary, makes the spreadsheet more complex and harder to read.
Can you do better?
Download the winning entry attached to this article and enjoy!
